Reno, Nev. – Following a 2-0 start, the Nevada baseball team (2-1) fell in the final day of the Texas State tournament to Utah (1-2) by a score of 6-3. The Utes scored five runs in the sixth frame, ending the Wolf Pack's streak of fifteen consecutive innings without allowing a run, dating back to Friday's content against Missouri State.
Freshman right-handed pitcher
Tyler Smith (0-1) had a strong debut to his college career, striking out the first batter he saw on three pitches and shutting out Utah through the first five innings. He tallied the loss after being responsible for three runs scored in the sixth, while Utah's Josh Tedeschi (1-0) picked up the win.
Nevada drew first blood in the contest off a
Kaleb Foster single that scored
Joshua Zamora to give the Pack a 1-0 lead. Foster ended the afternoon with a team-high two RBI after a sacrifice fly in the third, scoring
Dillan Shrum following his leadoff double.
The Pack ran into trouble in the sixth inning, loading the bases with no outs.
Cooper Powell and
Josh Congress each pitched in relief, but not before the Utes scored five runs.
The sixth-inning offensive burst by Utah snapped a streak of 23-consecutive innings to open the season that the Wolf Pack never trailed its opponent.
The seventh inning began with Utah tallying one more run, while a great defensive play by
Daniel Perry throwing out another runner at home and
Marco Valenzuela laying down the tag prevented another run to keep the deficit at 6-2.
The seventh inning showed promise for the Pack, as Nevada loaded the bases with one out, and Jaylon McLaughin was able to capitalize with an RBI single to bring the score to 6-3. Unfortunately, that would be the Pack's last run scored in the contest.
Bradley Bonnenfant pitched a career-high 2.1 innings and three strikeouts, working through the seventh frame until the end of the game. Zamora finished 3-for-4 at the plate, boasting a .571 batting average through three games.
Nevada will be back in action on Tuesday at UC Davis at 2:30 p.m. Doug Greenwald, the voice of the Nevada women's basketball team, will have the call on 94.1 FM/1450 AM.
