Sharts dominates collegiate debut in 4-0 victory over Texas State

First collegiate start and win

Reno, Nev. – In his collegiate debut, freshman Owen Sharts pitched seven shutout innings to lead Nevada (2-0) past Texas State (1-1) in a 4-0 victory. The Simi Valley, Calif. native only allowed three hits and struck out three Bobcats in the victory.

The Wolf Pack tallied four runs off five hits, three of which came from sophomore Joshua Zamora. The third baseman was responsible for three RBI on the afternoon and smacked his first home run of the season to lead off the seventh inning.

With today's victory, Nevada is 2-0 to start the year for the first time since 2015. The Pack is now 3-1 all time against Texas State following today's win.

Sharts (1-0) and Bobcats pitcher Hunter McMahon (0-1) each only faced six batters through the first two innings, but the Pack took advantage of some defensive miscues by Texas State in the third. After sophomore catcher Marco Valenzuela drew a walk, senior second baseman Keaton Smith reached on a fielding error, and both runners advanced into scoring position after a throwing error by McMahan. Zamora's first of three hits that day came next, knocking in both runs with a single to left field to give Nevada a 2-0 advantage.

Valenzuela continued his productive day in the bottom of the inning, turning a double play off a bunt that was laid down right in front of him. He then recorded an RBI in the fourth, bringing Zamora home on a groundout to the shortstop.

Sharts pitched 4.2 innings before recording his first collegiate strikeout to end the fifth frame. He finished the seventh inning without allowing an earned run on 91 total pitches.

Zamora's leadoff home run in the seventh inning all but sealed the deal for the Pack as it elevated it to a 4-0 lead with junior right-handed pitcher Shane Gustafson coming out of the bullpen for the final two frames. The Folsom Lake Community College transfer has only allowed one hit in three innings pitched after tossing two shutout frames to end the game.

Nevada will look to sweep the Texas State tournament with a matchup against the Utes on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. PT. Alex Margulies will call the game on 94.1 FM/1450 AM along with an online broadcast, with a live stream and live stats also available.
