Nevada falls to Hornets in last game of NorCal Kickoff

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Nevada softball team dropped the second and last game of the NorCal Kickoff, 9-0 to Sacramento State in five innings. The Pack move to 1-1 on the 2019 season.

The day started off rough when the initial games at Davis, Calif. were canceled due to field conditions forcing the Pack to make other arrangements. Ultimately, the team was able to make up the canceled game from Saturday against Sacramento State in the 2:30 p.m. contest.

Senior Kali Sargent got the start and pitched 1 1/3 innings before freshman Kendall Fritz came in relief to pitch 2 2/3 and finish the five inning game. Fritz grabbed seven strikeouts to add to her seven from yesterday for 14 combined so far this season.

The Hornets started the scoring in the bottom of the first and it continued through the second. Back-to-back singles in the second inning was followed by a three run homer to give them a 7-0 lead through two.

Nevada struggled on both sides of the ball with the lone hits of the game coming from a double that Kwynn Warner knocked into left center-field and was followed by a single from Ashley Salausa but the threat was not enough. Sacramento State added two insurance runs on a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth and secured the win with three quick outs in the top of the fifth.

The Pack are back in action next weekend when it travels to Houston, Texas to compete in the Houston Classic, Feb. 15-17.
