Nevada hosts Texas Southern in final non-conference home game

TEXAS SOUTHERN AT NEVADA PREVIEW

RENO, Nev. – Nevada (7-4. 1-0 MW) hosts Texas Southern (3-6) in the final home non-conference games of the season on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.  The Wolf Pack will look to get back on track after having its five-game win streak snapped at BYU.

The Tigers are led by former Wolf Pack associate head coach Johnny Jones.  Former Pack staff members Brandon Chambers and Derek Saich are also on the Jones' staff.  The coaches son John was a freshman walk-on at Nevada.

TSU has played seven of its nine games on the road posting a 1-6 record.  

Tyrick Armstrong leads TSU averaging 13.2 points per game and Yahuza Rasas is adding 9.2 points per game.  Armstrong tops the team grabbing 6.7 rebounds per game.

Nevada has a balanced attack as four players a scoring in double figures led by junior Jalen Harris' 17.5 points per game.  Jazz Johnson (17.4 ppg), Lindsey Drew (13.1 ppg) and Nisré Zouzoua (10 ppg).  Harris and Johnson are third and fourth respectively in the Mountain West in scoring.

Wednesday will be the first meeting between the two schools on the hardwood.

HARRIS LEADING THE PACK
    Junior Jalen Harris has scored in double figures in the last seven games including a career and team season-high 31 points at Air Force.  The 31 points is tied for the second most points by a player in the MW this season.  He scored 22 of the points in the first half.
    Harris leads the Pack in rebounding (6.7 rpg) and is second in assists (4.0 apg).  His 17.5 points per game tops the team and third in the MW.  The assist numbers rank fifth in the MW and the rebounds is eighth.
    Four times in the last six games he has scored 20 or more points including the 31 points at Air Force.  In the win over Santa Clara he posted his first career double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.  His game-high eight assists left him two shy of a triple double.
    In four games he posted game highs in points, four times he posted a game-high in assists and three times posted a game-high in rebounds.
    From the field he is shooting 40.7 percent and 34 percent from behind the arc.  At the free throw line he had a streak of 19 in a row snapped at BYU going 5-of-8.  Overall is shooting 83.3 percent.
    Harris injured his foot in the season opener with Utah playing just 8 minutes and missed the LMU game.  He returned to the lineup against UT Arlington and scored a game-high 24 points in the victory.

WOLF PACK RECORDS IMPRESSIVE FIVE-GAME WIN STREAK
    Nevada won a season-high five in row prior to the loss at BYU.  All five wins were by double figures.    The Wolf Pack swept its way to the 2019 Paradise Jam Championship with a 74-60 victory over Fordham, downed Valparaiso 84-59 in the semifinals and knocked off Bowling Green 77-62 in the title game.  The largest margin of victory came in the fourth win as Nevada defeated Santa  Clara 98-67.  At Air Force the Pack made it five in a row scoring 100 points for the first time this season in a 100-85 road victory.  It was the team's first true road win of the season.  In the last two games Nevada has scored 198 points.
    The Pack did not trail in three of the five games; Fordham, Valpo and SCU.  In the BGSU game Nevada trailed for just 41 seconds, 2-0 before a 3-pointer put them ahead to stay 3-2.  At Air Force the Pack trailed for 33 seconds, 2-0 before an 8-0 run put them ahead to stay.
    In the five games Nevada averaged 86.6 points and held opponents to just 66.6 points. From the field the Pack shot 48.9 (150-of-307) percent and 47.7 (63-of-132) percent from behind the arc.   Opponents shot 37.7 percent overall and just 23.7 percent on 3-pointers.  
    Jalen Harris is averaged 22.8 points, seven rebounds and 5.8 assists per game.  Jazz Johnson is scored 18.4 points per contest and is shooting 58.8 percent from behind the arc making 20-of-34.  Nizré Zouzoua contributed 11.4 points per game and made 12-of-23 3-pointers.  Freshman Zane Meeks scored 10 points per game and made 41.7 (10-of-24) percent on his 3-point attempts.

JOHNSON KNOCKING DOWN THE 3S
    Wolf Pack senior Jazz Johnson has been knocking down the 3-pointers at a high rate this season having made 38-of-85.  The 38 made 3-pointers and 3.5 made per game leads the Mountain West.  The 38 made 3s is fourth in NCAA I and 3.5 made per game is 13th.  His 44.7 percent shooting from behind the arc is 26th in the country and first in the MW.
    At the Paradise Jam he made 60 percent of his 3-pointers connecting on 15-of-25 in three games.  In the title game he made 7-of-10.  The seven made tied his career-high that also occurred at Air Force last season and is tied for the most made by a player in the MW this season.  He has made a 3-pointer in each game this season and three or more in eight contests.
    Johnson second on the team and is fourth in the MW averaging 17.4 points per game.  Four times he has scored 20 or more points; 20 vs. LMU, 26 vs. USC, 25 vs. BGSU and 20 vs. SCU.  In the USC, BGSU and SCU games the point totals were game highs.
        He ranks in the top 50 in four NCAA statistical categories.  
    He has scored 1,293 points in his career with 740 coming in his two years at Portland.

ZOUZOUA PROVIDING SPARK OFF THE BENCH
    Senior Nisré Zouzoua has provided a spark off the bench in his second year in the program.  Zouzoua is fourth on the team averaging 10 points per game and is third dishing out 1.8 assists per game.
    In five of the last seven games Zouzoua has scored in double figures and five times on the season. He scored nine points in each of the first two games of the season which were then Nevada career highs.  Against UT Arlington he nearly doubled that netting 16 points, making 6-of-8 shots from the field of which 3-of-5 were from behind the arc.
    At the Paradise Jam he averaged 11 points per game. He scored 11 points in the win over Fordham and 15 in the victory against Valparaiso.

HARRIS NAMED MW PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Junior Jalen Harris was named the Dec. 9 Mountain West Player of the Week after helping the Wolf Pack to a pair of wins.  Harris averaged 23.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and five assists as the Pack's season-high win streak reached five games.  He joins Lindsey Drew as the second Nevada player to earn the MW weekly honor this season.
    In Nevada's first road win of the season at Air Force he scored a career-high 31 points with 22 coming in the first half.  The 31 points is the high for a Pack player this season and tied for the second most points scored by a MW player this season.
    In the Pack's non-conference home win over Santa Clara Harris recorded his first career double-double finishing with 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds which is also a career high.  The 11 rebounds is the high for a Nevada player this season.  His game-high eight assists in the SCU game left him two shy of a triple-double.  The eight assists is tied with Drew for the high this season for a Nevada player.
    From the field Harris shot 57.7 (15-of-26) percent, 50 (5-of-10) percent from behind the arc and was a perfect 12-of-12 at the free throw line during the week.

DREW NAMED MOUNTAIN WEST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
    University of Nevada senior Lindsey Drew was been named the Nov. 11, Mountain West Player of the Week for his play in the Wolf Pack's first two games of the season.  Drew averaged 27 points, 7.5 rebounds and 7.5 assists as the Pack split its first two games of the season.        
    Drew had a big night in his first regular season game since Feb. 14, 2018 when he ruptured his achilles at Boise State, on a last second shot to end the first half.  In his 100th game and 94th start for the Wolf Pack he scored a career-high 30 points in against Utah. 
    Drew had a new career high by halftime with 18 with his previous high of 17 coming against UNLV on Feb. 6, 2018.  He made 12-of-19 field goals and 5-of-9 three-pointers all are career bests.  In addition he dished out a game-high eight assists and tied for team honors with six rebounds in 36 minutes.  He did not commit a turnover.
    In the Pack's win over Loyola Marymount he scored a game-high 24 points in leading Nevada to the 72-67 win over the Lions.  Drew just missed a double-double as he tied for game honors with nine rebounds.  He also dished out a game-high seven assists.

NEVADA FALLS AT BYU


PROVO, Utah (AP) Jake Toolson had 15 points, Yoeli Childs had a double-double and BYU handed Nevada its worst loss of the season, 75-42, on Tuesday night.

Childs had 14 points and 13 rebounds for his second-straight double-double in his third game back from a season-opening suspension. Alex Barcello added 13 points, TJ Haws 11 and Connor Harding 10 for BYU (8-4).

Jalen Harris had 15 points for the Wolf Pack (7-4), who scored 24 points less than their previous low game. There made a season-low 16 field goals on 65 attempts for a season-worst 24.6%. They went 3 of 23 from 3-point range when had have been shooting 40% and making more than 10 a game.

BYU went 12 of 37 from 3-point range, five by Toolson, increasing its record to five-straight games with double-figure triples.

Nevada was 7 of 12 from the foul line, six less makes than its average.

UP NEXT: vs. Saint Mary's at Chase Arena in San Francisco in the Al Attles Classic

The Gaels are 10-2 this season and will play Arizona State in Phoenix on Dec. 18 prior to facing the Pack in the Al Attles Classic at the Chase Center in San Francisco.  The Chase Center is the new home of the NBA's Golden State Warriors.  The game is the last of four in the event.  Stanford plays SDSU, Cal faces Boston College and Arizona takes on St. John's.
