Nevada drops five-set heartbreaker to San José State

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Nevada volleyball team moves to 16-9, 6-7 on the season after dropping a heart-breaker on the road to San José State in five sets. The Pack won the first and third sets, 25-19 and 25-18 but fell in the fifth and final set, 16-14.

Kayla Afoa led the team with 14 kills and 12 digs for her 15th double-double on the year while Dalyn Burns posted her 13th with 36 assists and 16 digs. Sydney Petersen had a career high three solo blocks along with five block assists on the night to go with her seven kills.

Other notable performances were the nine service aces by the Pack along with 22 block assists in the match. That matches the most block assists in a conference match this season next to the 22 posted against UNLV.

In the first set, Kassie McGill, Afoa and Brianna Souza combined for nine of the 11 kills while Petersen tallied a block solo to give the Pack the 25-19 win. It started on a 2-0 run by Nevada and maintained the lead throughout the entire set. With Nevada leading 13-8, San José State called its first timeout but the momentum stayed with the Pack. The Spartans called another timeout when the lead extended to five, 20-15 but a service ace from Burns and a couple kills later and the set was wrapped up, 25-19.

The second set got off to a much different start as the Spartans collected the first two points and went out on a 7-2 lead before Lee Nelson called a timeout. Robins collected back-to-back kills before recording a block solo to tie it up, 14-14 but a quick 4-0 run by the Spartans took back the lead, 18-14. Camryn Rocha picked up her first kill of the night but a 4-1 run by the Spartans gave them the set, 25-19.

Mandalay Rennon started the third set how she knows best, with a service ace. The freshman was not alone though with Kaila Spevak knocking an ace to put the Pack up, 3-1. After a kill from SJSU and a block from McGill and Souza, Afoa was behind the service line and tallied three service aces that was sandwiched between kills to put Nevada up, 11-3. Following a Spartan timeout, Burns got a service ace for herself to put Nevada up 18-6. A kill from Souza, her fifth on the night set up set point and a service error from the Spartans gave Nevada the set, 25-13.

The fourth set started in a back-and-forth way as it was tied on four different occasions but the Spartans was the first to score two in a row and Nevada just could not recover. SJSU led for the rest of the set and took it 25-18.

The Pack went on a 3-0 scoring run to go up, 8-4 at the switch in the fifth, following two block assists from Burns and Souza. Following back-to-back challenges and block solo from Petersen, San José State called timeout with Nevada leading, 12-6. A 4-0 scoring run by the Spartans put them within two, 12-10, inducing a Nevada timeout. When SJSU tied it up, 14-14 the momentum was in their favor and an attack error by the Pack ended the match with the Spartans winning it, 3-2.

Up next for Nevada is a road match at Air Force on Saturday, Nov. 9 at noon. The match will be live streamed on the Mountain West Network as well as live stats through nevadawolfpack.com.
