LARAMIE, Wyo. - The Nevada volleyball team moves to 14-7, 4-5 in Mountain West play after falling to the Cowgirls of Wyoming in three straight sets.
Brianna Souza led the Wolf Pack with eight kills while
Sydney Petersen had six.
Kayla Afoa,
Kassie McGill and
Camryn Rocha each had four.
Dalyn Burns recorded another double-double with 22 assists and 12 digs to lead the team in each category. McGill led in the blocks section with five assists along with Petersen who had four.
The Cowgirls quickly took the first set, 25-16, Robins led the team in kills with three. McGill recorded two block assists in the set with one alongside Petersen and another with Afoa. It was similar in the second but the Wolf Pack tied it up on a McGill kill, 2-2 before a kill from Souza took the 4-3 lead. The Cowgirls went on a 5-3 run to go up, 16-11 before Nevada called a timeout.
Following the timeout, another 5-4 run from Wyoming put the Cowgirls up 21-15. Rocha found herself a kill to pull within five but Wyoming took another four straight points, 24-16; Petersen got her fifth kill on the night to hold off the set point but a quick kill from the Cowgirls took it, 25-17.
In the third set, Nevada split the first two kills with Afoa tallying her fourth in the match before Wyoming went on a 7-1 run and force the timeout from
Lee Nelson. After the timeout, Petersen tallied a kill and it was followed up by an ace from Afoa, her first of the night. The Pack continued the 3-0 scoring run after a block from
Kyla Waiters and Petersen pulled Nevada within three, 8-5, Wyoming.
After cutting the Cowgirls lead to just three, Wyoming went on two seven point scoring runs to extend the lead, 23-10. Nevada fought back and claimed three points but a quick hit and kill from Wyoming sealed it, 25-13.
Next for Nevada is a match with No. 14 Colorado State in Fort Collins, Colo. on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 12 pm PT. After the conclusion of the match between the Ram and the Pack, Nevada returns to the Virginia Street Gym or two home matches with Utah State and Boise State, Oct. 31 and Nov. 2.
