Box Score RENO, Nev. – The Wolf Pack women's tennis team saw several athletes push into the quarterfinals yesterday. The first day of the Cal Invitational saw
Maria Tatarnikova, Melissa Hutchet and
Marta Ruedas all advance to quarterfinals.
Tatarnikova made it to the quarterfinals of the ITA Gold Singles bracket after defeating the University of San Francisco's Alisha Sharma 6-0, 6-4. She followed up the opening-round performance with a battle against California's Jasie Dunk, winning 7-6(4), 6-4.
In the same bracket, Hutchet opened her singles competition with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Santa Clara's Nadine DelCarmen. Then in the round of 16, Hutchet topped UC Santa Barbara's Amit Lev-Ari 6-3, 6-0.
Today, Tatarnikova will play Brigham Young University's Madeline Almeida. Hutchet will go against Cal's Maria Smith. Should both ladies earn victories today, they would match up against each other in the semifinal round tomorrow.
Also in the ITA Gold Singles bracket,
Adriana Gergelyova topped Saint Mary's' Liesl Pieters 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 32. In the round of 16, Gergelyova fell to UC Davis' Shirley Hall 1-6, 6-0, 6-7(4).
In the ITA Blue Singles Competition, three members of the Pack advanced past the first round of the consolation bracket.
Freshman
Selina Turulja won her first match against Santa Clara's Elvena Gevargiz, with a score of 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. In the second round, Turulja fell to Clementine Clement of Saint Mary's 1-6, 6-7(2). Turulja will square off against UC Santa Barbara's Tiffany Lagarde in the second round of the ITA Blue Singles consolation bracket.
Also in the ITA Blue Singles bracket,
Kristina Lagoda, Ruedas and
Anastaysha Gorbacheva all fell in the first round to move to the consolation bracket.
In the consolation bracket, Ruedas and Gorbacheva were victorious in round one. Ruedas earned a bye for round two, and will compete in the quarterfinals today. Gobacheva earned a bye in the first round, and will face Chloe Goyette from Saint Mary's.
In the doubles competition, the Wolf Pack duo of
Marta Ruedas and
Selina Turulja dropped their contest against Anastasia Goncharova and Elizaveta Volosko of UC Santa Barbara.
