RENO, Nev. – A pair of Nevada football student-athletes, sophomore
McLane Mannix and senior
Ty Gangi, have earned spots on watch lists for the Paul Hornung Award and Wuerffel Trophy, respectively.
This is Mannix's first selection to the watch list for the Paul Hornung Award presented by Texas Roadhouse, which goes to the most versatile player in college football. He is among 43 players selected to the watch list from around the country and is one of just three to earn the distinction from around the Mountain West.
As a true freshman in 2017, Mannix caught 57 passes for 778 yards and six touchdowns for the Wolf Pack. He was second on the team in all three categories, and he ranked fifth in receiving yardage and sixth in receptions in the Mountain West Conference. Mannix, who is slated to take on a larger role in special teams returns this season, returned two punts last year with a long return of 34 yards in the win over UNLV.
Gangi joins 105 others on the watch list for the Wuerffel Trophy, which honors college football's top community servant. Gangi also recently was named a nominee for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, an award also geared towards community service. The award is presented annually at the All Sports Association's Awards Banquet in Fort Walton Beach. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.
Gangi has spent his time serving the community by coaching youth football leagues, volunteering at multiple elementary schools, and donating socks to the homeless. The Glendale, Calif. native also raised $1,200 and shaved his head for St. Baldricks and serves as a mentor at 360 Blueprint every week. After leading the conference in passing offense in MW play last season, Gangi will look to lead the Air Raid attack for the Pack in his senior season.
