Fennell signs minor league contract with Chicago Cubs

Named the MW Tony Gwynn Player of the Year in 2018

RENO, Nev. – Former Wolf Pack outfielder Grant Fennell has signed a minor league free agent contract with the Chicago Cubs after playing four years at Nevada. After being named first team All-West Region, Fennell was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association and Rawlings Sporting Goods All-America third team this past weekend.

"We are really excited and happy for Grant for signing a deal with the Chicago Cubs," said head coach TJ Bruce. "He was a big part of his program and we wish him nothing but the best going forward and can't wait to continue cheering him on."

A native of San Diego, Calif., Fennell was named the Tony Gwynn Mountain West Player of the Year after leading the conference with a .389 batting average in 2018. Fennell was also named All-MW first team.

In addition to leading the Wolf Pack in hitting, he topped the team in on-base percentage (.486), runs scored (46), hits (79), RBI (52), total bases (114), walks (27), at bats (203), stolen bases (8), multiple hit games (26) and multiple RBI games (15).  He ended his collegiate career reaching base in his final 32 games and 50-of-51 games played in his senior year.  In 44-of-51 games, he collected a hit and twice had a career-high four hits this season at SJSU and UNLV.
