Zheng qualifies for 3-meter springboard at NCAA Zones

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz.  – Nevada senior Sharae Zheng won the 3-meter springboard at the NCAA Zone E Championships on Tuesday and has now qualified for two events at the NCAA Championships. On Monday, Zheng came out on top of the 1-meter springboard, along with junior Sio I Lei who placed fifth in the event.

After winning the preliminary rounds of the 3-meter springboard with a score of 372.35, Zheng came out firing again in the finals. Amongst the 18 divers who competed in the finals, Zheng was the only participant whose average round score was above 60 points. That margin helped lead her to a total of 762.35 points, which was nearly 100 points more than Eliose Belanger of UCLA who placed second.

The finals of the 3-meter springboard also saw Nevada junior Toma Shmitova, who placed 18th overall. She scored 566.05 after recording a 280.50 in the prelims. Lei was not far off from competing in the finals as well, finishing 20th in the prelims with a score of 271.80.

The third and final day of the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships will take place on Wednesday as all three of Nevada's divers will compete in the platform dive. With Zheng's win in both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard as well as Lei's fifth-place finish in the 1-meter springboard, the two divers will head to the NCAA Championships, which will take place in Columbus, Ohio March 14-17.
