RENO, Nev. – Sophomore Dillan Shrum's two-RBI double in the fifth inning proved to be the difference in Nevada's (10-7) 6-3 victory at the University of San Francisco (12-8) on Tuesday. The Wolf Pack used six different pitchers and only allowed four hits on the afternoon.
Both teams were held scoreless until the third inning, when senior outfielder Grant Fennell smacked a single to right center field to score Daniel Perry and Conor Allard with two outs. The hit gave Fennell 12 RBI on the season, tied with Perry for second-most on the team and put Nevada ahead 2-0.
Making his fourth start, Dalton Gomez (1-1) walked the bases loaded in the third inning but forced the Dons to ground into a double play. They plated one run, but Gomez limited the damage and kept Nevada's lead at 2-1 after three frames.
Ty Hueckman (1-0) earned his first collegiate win after one inning of work. While the Dons took the lead in the fourth on a two-RBI double, Nevada's offense found a spark in the top of the fifth. Mike Echavia grounded out but plated one run, and Shrum's big swing that gave Nevada a 5-3 lead also helped Hueckman earn the victory. Echavia was walked a season-high four times in the contest.
The most dominant performance of the day on the mound came from right-handed pitcher Jordan Jackson (0-0). The freshman blasted through the sixth and seventh innings without allowing a hit and recording three strike outs. He has now pitched 4.1 frames in his first year of college baseball and has yet to allow a hit while punching out six batters.
Sophomore Ryan Anderson (1-1) was perfect in the eighth frame, setting up senior Keone Cabinian (0-0) to seal the deal in the ninth and earn his second save.
The Pack will play a series this weekend at Mountain West foe Fresno State. All three games will be streamed live on the Mountain West Network.
