Turnovers prove costly in road loss at SJSU

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Nevada women's basketball team dropped a 57-54 decision Wednesday night on the road at San Jose State.

The Wolf Pack (12-14, 5-10 MW) forced the Spartans (7-19, 4-11 MW) into 21 turnovers but committed 21 itself, third most of the season. Thirteen of the 21 turnovers came in the first half where the Pack scored 21 points, which tied its lowest first half score of the season. It was an uncharacteristic low scoring affair between these two teams, which combined to score 154 points in the earlier meeting in Reno in January.

Nevada trailed by nine coming out of halftime and used the third period, its best of the game, to close in on the Spartans. In the third the Pack held SJSU to just 23.1 percent shooting and outscored its opponent 14-7 to enter the final quarter down by just two, 37-35.

The Pack quickly gained the lead just eight seconds into the quarter after sophomore Camariah King knocked down a key three-point shot, giving the Pack a one point lead. The Spartans however took that moment to spark a run of their own, regaining the lead and pushing their lead out to eight at the 5:49 mark. While the Pack would not lead the rest of the game, it did not come without its chances.

Nevada had the game within a two-point deficit three times in the last five minutes of play but could not find a way to get back out in front. After a layup by Terae Briggs brought the score to 56-54 in favor of SJSU, Jade Redmon got in on the ensuing inbound pass by the Spartans for the steal, giving possession back to Nevada with 33 seconds on the clock. On the next possession Teige Zeller put up a potential game-tying hook shot but the ball rolled all the way around the iron and off. SJSU was then sent to the foul line, making 1-of-2 to stretch it to a three-point game. With six seconds on the clock King heaved up a three ball, looking for the game-tying bucket but it did not fall, sealing the win for the Spartans.

Zeller and Briggs each posted a double-double in the game for the second consecutive game. Zeller finished with a team-high 18 points and 15 rebounds to collect her 10th double-double of the season. She had a near double-double in the first half with nine points and nine rebounds at halftime. Briggs scored 11 points and added 10 rebounds to post her fourth double-double of the year.

Nevada concludes the road portion of its 2017-18 regular season schedule with a 1 p.m. PT matchup at Colorado State this Saturday, Feb. 24.
