MISSOULA, Mont. – A strong comeback bid in the second half was not enough to lift the Nevada women's basketball team over UC Davis on Saturday as the Pack fell 84-68 in the opening game of the Lady Griz Classic.
The Aggies (3-4) were able to distance themselves from the Wolf Pack (1-5) in the second quarter, shooting nearly 60 percent from the field and outscoring Nevada 23-10. That was the only lopsided period of the game as the Pack kept it close in the first, 24-18, and won the second half battle 40-37. Nevada's shooting went cold though in the second, knocking down just 4-of-12 (33.3 percent) from the field, which allowed the Aggies to jump out to a 47-28 lead at halftime.
UC Davis scored the first four points of the third quarter, but a good jumper from senior
Jade Redmon jump started a series of productive offensive possessions for Nevada. The Pack, which trailed by 23 points at the 3:47 mark of the third, locked down on defense and went on a 13-2 run to cut the gap to 13 as the period neared its end. Those 13 points were capped off by a pair of 3-pointers, first from senior
Terae Briggs and then 25 seconds later from junior
Mikayla Christian.
The Pack kept the fight going in the fourth quarter as well, but found itself playing even with the Aggies and not able to cut more into the deficit. The two teams traded baskets for much of the period with the deficit hanging right around 13 points. Nevada was able to cut it to 12 after Redmon knocked down a free throw with 2:43 remaining, but a jumper at the other end with just over two to play, stretched the lead back out to 14, ultimately sealing the win for the Aggies.
Nevada was led by Briggs, a Montana native, who tied her career high of 22 points to lead all scorers. Briggs finished the game 8-of-15 from the floor, was 5-of-6 from the free throw line and knocked down the first 3-pointer of her career. Freshman
Amaya West reached double figures in the game as well for the first time in her career, finishing with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting and hit two triples. Redmon kept her double figure scoring streak alive after adding 11 points. She has reached double digits in six consecutive contests.
Nevada will play the loser of the second game of the Lady Griz Classic between Montana and Northern Illinois on Sunday at either 11 a.m. PT or 1 p.m. PT.
