Strong defensive effort not enough against Fresno State

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Marcus McMaryion was 20-of-28 passing for 241 yards and Ronnie Rivers scored two touchdowns to help Fresno State beat Nevada 21-3 on Saturday night.

McMaryion threw touchdowns passes to Rivers and KeeSean Johnson, who finished with seven receptions for 65 yards.

Fresno State (4-1, 1-0 Mountain West), which came in averaging 45 points and 439.8 total yards per game, was limited to a season-low 271 yards but forced three Nevada turnovers.

Rivers took a screen pass 19 yards for a score with 13:11 left in the second quarter and, after Nevada's Ramiz Ahmed made a 41-yard field goal, the Bulldogs took a 7-3 lead into halftime.

Rivers, on fourth down, scored on a 2-yard run early in the third quarter and Johnson's 27-yard TD reception capped the scoring midway through the fourth.

Cristian Solano was 22-of-43 passing for 195 yards with three interceptions and added 23 carries for 71 yards for Nevada (3-3, 1-1). Kaleb Fossum had 12 receptions for 97 yards.

Postgame notes – Fresno State

-Nevada's defense held Fresno State to just 30 rushing yards in the game, the lowest amount it has given up since it also surrendered 30 rushing yards to San Jose State in 2009.
-The Wolf Pack led the game in yards of total offense, 327 to 271 and led in first downs, 21 to 12.
-Nevada, which came into the game ranked ninth in opponent 3rd down conversion, held Fresno State to 3-of-13 on third downs.
-The Wolf Pack defense also held Fresno State to 21 points, when the Bulldogs came in averaging 45.0 points per game, 11th best in the nation.
-Quarterback Christian Solano made his first career start after having four previous appearances with the Wolf Pack in his second season.
-Solano ran for a career-long 15 yards on the first drive of the game.
-In the first quarter, linebacker Malik Reed recorded his 18th-career sack, tied for the seventh-most in Nevada history. He is tied with Brett Roy (2008-11) and Derek Kennard (2000-03).
-Reed now ranks tied for eighth in career sacks among active FBS players with 18.
-Neither team scored in the first quarter of the game. The last time that happened for both schools came in week two of the 2018 season.
-In the second quarter, on a 4th down and two, Solano ran for 13 yards to convert for the first down.
-In the second quarter, Ramiz Ahmed drilled a 41-yard field goal for Nevada's first points of the night. He is now 5-for-7 on the season.
-With 2:21 remaining in the first half, Dameon Baber forced a fumble inside the Nevada red zone that was recovered by Gabe Sewell. It was Baber's third-career forced fumble and Sewell's third-career fumble recovery.
-The seven points allowed by the defense in the first half tied for the lowest allowed this season. Nevada only allowed Air Force seven points in the first-half last week.
-Nevada held the Bulldogs to only 116 yards in the first half.
-In the third quarter, Quinton Conaway booted a 74-yard punt, the longest of his career. It's the longest punt since Brad Langley had a 77 yard punt at UNLV on Sept. 27, 2008. He finished the game with a 44.1 yards per punt average, his second-best of the season.
-Nevada only committed one penalty, the lowest amount season. Its previous low this season was six penalties at Vanderbilt in week two.
-Junior WR Kaleb Fossum made 11 catches in the game, second-most this season, and fell just four yards shy of his third 100-yard receiving performance of the year.
-Nevada went for it on fourth down six times with a 50 percent success rate.
-Sophomore tight end Reagan Roberson made his first-career catch in the third quarter for a gain of six yards.
-Solano's 23 rushing attempts were the most by a Nevada quarterback this season.
-The all-time series between Nevada and Fresno State is now 29-20-1 in favor of Fresno State. This is the second-longest series in Nevada's history at 50 games behind 54 games against UC Davis.
