Nevada defense stifles Hawai'i in 40-22 road victory

HONOLULU, Hawai'i (AP) - Toa Taua had 126 yards rushing and a touchdown on 18 carries and Ty Gangi passed for 247 yards and a score to help Nevada beat Hawaii 40-22 on Saturday night.

Elijah Cooks had three receptions for 54 yards and a touchdown and added a 40-yard rushing TD on a bubble screen for the Wolf Pack.

John Ursua scored on a 70-yard catch-and-run as the first quarter expired to give Hawaii (6-3, 3-1 Mountain West Conference) a 14-10 lead before Nevada pulled away. Ramiz Ahmed trimmed Nevada's deficit to one with a 27-yard field goal and Devonte Lee scored on a 1-yard run to make it 20-14 at the break and Taua's 13-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter pushed the lead to 19.

JoJo Ward scored on a 2-yard reception and Cole McDonald hit Marcus Armstrong-Brown for the 2-point conversion to cap a nine-play, 80-yard drive and make it 33-22, but Nevada recovered the ensuing onside kick and, four plays later, Devonte Lee's 6-yard touchdown run capped the scoring with 59 seconds to play.

McDonald threw for 259 yards and three touchdowns for Hawaii.

Nevada (4-4, 2-2) had four fourth-down stops, including a fourth-and-goal from the 3 late in the third quarter.

Postgame notes – Hawai'i

-Nevada handed Hawai'i its first Mountain West loss on Saturday night.
-Senior DE Korey Rush recorded three sacks in the first half, giving him 6.0 sacks season. He now has 10.5 in his career. Rush's 3.0 sacks are a single game career high and are the fourth-most in a single game in Wolf Pack history. Rush's four TFLs are a career-high.
-Senior QB Ty Gangi completed 21-of-29 pass attempts for 247 yards and one touchdown. His 72.4 completion percentage was the second-highest this season, and this was his first game this season that he did not throw an interception.
-The Nevada defense held Hawai'i's offense to 371 yards of total offense, when it came in averaging 448.8. It ranked 36th in the nation.
-The Pack defense also held Hawai'i to 259 passing yards when it came in averaging 313, good for 15th best in the nation.
-Hawai'i converted only on 1-of-5 fourth downs.
-The Nevada offense went a perfect 5-for-5 in the rezone. The Pack accumulated two field goals and three touchdowns in those five drives.
-Nevada's 220 rushing yards were the second-most in a game this season, behind 262 at Toledo.
-Sophomore WR Elijah Cooks has TD receptions in four of his last five games, and five total TD catches in that stretch. He had a 29-yard TD reception in the first quarter to give Nevada its first lead of the game.
-Elijah Cooks was credited with the first rushing TD of his career in the third quarter, giving him six total TDs in his last five games. It was Cooks' second multi-TD game of his career, the first coming at Air Force earlier this season.
-Senior LB Lucas Weber recorded a solo sack in the third quarter, his first of the season and second of his career.
-Sophomore WR McLane Mannix has a reception in every game of his collegiate career thus far, with the streak up to 20 games.
-True freshman RB Toa Taua scored his fifth rushing TD of the season in the fourth quarter, a 13-yard rush that put Nevada ahead 33-14. He went over the century mark with that rush for the second time this season and finished the game with 126 rushing yards.
-True freshman RB Devonte Lee's 5-yard TD run in the second quarter was his second of the season and first since the season opener against Portland State. He added a second rushing TD to seal the win in the fourth quarter, the first multi-TD game of his career.
-Nevada is now 4-0 this season, and 6-1 under Jay Norvell, when leading at halftime and when leading after the third quarter.
-Senior PK Ramiz Ahmed is now a perfect 9-for-9 in his career on FG attempts inside 40 yards after he hit 23-yard and 27-yard field goals in the first half.
-The all-time series between Nevada and Hawai'i is now 14-9, in favor of the Wolf Pack. Nevada has won three of the last four meetings in Honolulu, and seven of the last eight meetings overall.
-Nevada's next game, Saturday, Oct. 27, will air on ESPNU at 7:30 p.m.
-Coach Jay Norvell's next Gritiron Luncheon will be on Monday at 11:30 a.m. inside the Basin Street Club at Mackay Stadium.
