RENO, Nev. – A 28-5 third quarter favored the Nevada women's basketball team and propelled the Wolf Pack to a 70-60 Mountain West win Saturday afternoon over Air Force.
The Wolf Pack improved its overall record to 9-6, two wins shy of matching its win total from last season, and evened its conference mark at 2-2. Sophomore
Camariah King posted a new career high, scoring a team-high 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting and was perfect from beyond the arc, knocking down 3-of-3. Senior
Ashlee Jones also knocked down 3-of-3 from the three-point line and produced one of the best games of her career. Jones finished with 12 points, a season high and the most points she has scored in a game since Feb. 28, 2015.
Senior
Teige Zeller and junior
AJ Cephas also scored in double figures for the Pack, each notching 13 points. Zeller fell two rebounds shy of her fourth consecutive double-double. On the boards Nevada was led by senior
Halie Bergman, who tied her career high with nine rebounds. As a team the Pack dished out 20 assists, fourth-most this season, and were led by King and senior
T Moe who each collected five.
It was the third quarter that separated the two teams as the Wolf Pack outscored the Falcons (0-14, 0-3 MW) by a 28-5 margin in that 10 minute span. Nevada recorded its best offensive period of the season as it shot 80 percent (12-of-15) to stake a 59-42 lead. Coming into the third quarter the Pack trailed by six, 37-31, but stormed out of the gates with make after make.
Starting at the 8:21 mark of the third on a jumper by
Terae Briggs, Nevada embarked on a 19-0 run and held Air Force without a single point for six and a half minutes. Over the last 8:32 of the third Nevada outscored its opponent 21-2. The Pack claimed its first double digit lead of the game at 3:56 in the third when Cephas knocked down a jump shot, extending the lead to 11.
Air Force would not go away quietly though despite being down by 17 heading into the final quarter. The Falcons outscored the Pack 18-11 in that stretch and held Nevada to just 30.8 percent (4-of-13) shooting. The lead was just far too great to overcome in a 10 minute span. The closest the Falcons got to the Pack was the 10-point margin of the final score.
Nevada has its first bye of the season next week and will return to the court on Saturday, Jan. 13 with a 1 p.m. PT contest at Utah State.
