RENO, Nev. – The turnout Thursday night at the 34th Bobby Dolan Baseball Dinner ended up as one of the largest ever, with over 700 people in attendance. San Francisco Giants skipper Bruce Bochy was accompanied by best-selling author Kevin Freiberg.
The annual event is put on every year serves as a primary fundraiser for the Nevada baseball program. Last night's event featured speeches from Athletic Director Doug Knuth, head Nevada baseball coach TJ Bruce and a conversation on stage between Freiberg and Bochy.
Freiberg sat down with Bochy and discussed themes that the manager lived by and helped him become so successful, such as the importance of team chemistry. Bochy treated the audience to antidotes and stories about big moments of his career as a manager, such as moving Tim Lincecum to the bullpen in the 2012 World Series or pitching Madison Bumgarner in game seven against the Kansas City Royals.
There was both a live and silent auction, featuring a plethora of signed memorabilia by current Giants' players and former Nevada baseball players such as Chris Gimenez and TJ Friedl. One of the top selling items came from the live auction, when Bochy gave four tickets to a Giants game next season as well as passes to come out on the field during the team's batting practice and a tour of the dugout and Bochy's office.
At the end of the night, a video was played thanking Don Weir for his $1 million gift to improve the field at Peccole Park. The donation allowed for the Pack to install a new synthetic playing surface, and is now the Don Weir Field at Peccole Park.
