SAN DIEGO – Sophomore
Ayla Fresenius posted a team-high 11 kills, however her effort was not enough as the Nevada volleyball team (4-12, 2-2 MW) fell to the San Diego State Aztecs (7-10, 1-3 MW) Saturday afternoon in straight sets by scores of 19-25, 20-25, 16-25.
Fresenius came two digs short of collecting her fifth double-double of the year, finishing the match with a team-best eight digs. Freshman
McKayla Wuensch continued her recent trend of success, collecting her second career-high in as many contests with 12 assists on the day. As team, the Wolf Pack struggled to get anything going on the offensive end, hitting just .100 in the match.
The afternoon began with the Aztecs jumping out to an early 7-1 lead, a deficit which the Pack was never able to overcome. Blocks from junior
Gabby Szachara and freshman
Sam Hayward brought Nevada to within two points (16-14), but SDSU responded with a 9-5 run of its own to close out set number one and win 25-19.
Nevada battled in set two, finding itself tying the score five times early on, including at the 10-10 mark, courtesy of one of Hayward's seven kills on the afternoon. The Pack was able to keep the score close throughout the entire set, but a strong .242 clip from SDSU allowed the Aztecs to pull away with the 25-20 victory.
Set number three saw Nevada post a .074 tick, which the Aztecs took advantage of as the Pack fell in the final set 25-16. Up next, Nevada will return home and play host to New Mexico on Oct. 7. First serve for that match is slated for 6:30 p.m. PT.
