RENO, Nev. – Even though sophomores
Ayla Fresenius and
Dalyn Burns put up double-double performances, the Nevada Wolf Pack (2-10) fell to the Pepperdine Waves (8-5) Saturday afternoon ahead of Mountain West play.
Burns, who has proved she can be a defensive setter, tallied 10 digs with her 44 assists in the match, one of five Wolf Pack players to record double-figure digs against the Waves. Fresenius also recorded 10 digs while putting up 14 kills for her double-double. Sophomore
Shayla Hoeft tied for the match high with 15 kills, hitting a solid .324 to continue one of the best stretches of her career. Both freshman
Kayla Afoa and sophomore
Camille Davey tied the match high in digs with 15.
De Von and Minor set the team's tone early in the first set, combining for a block to score the first point. The Pack didn't give up the lead for the first half of the set, forcing Pepperdine to call a timeout with a 14-10 Nevada lead. The regrouping did the Waves some good, coming back to take the lead. Trailing 21-19, it was then Nevada who was forced to call the timeout. The Wolf Pack came back to within one, 23-22, before the
Ashley Maki ace knotted it up at 23. Pepperdine would score the next two points, however, taking the set 25-23.
There wasn't a whole lot of budging from either side in set two as the match tied up seven times with two lead changes before either team hit 15 points. Although tied up by as much as 18, Pepperdine took a 21-19 to break up the back-and-forth action. Nevada would come back to tie it at 24-24, but Pepperdine closed the set on a 3-1 run, taking the second frame 27-25 and going up in the match 2-0.
Nevada went up 10-5 to take the first significant lead of the third set. The Waves answered the lead with a 6-1 run to tie it up at 11, followed by another big Nevada lead, this time at 14-11. It was all Nevada from there, taking set No. 3 25-22.
Despite both Fresenius and Burns topping off their double-doubles, the final set went all Waves, taking it 25-18 to win the match 3-1.
After a long month of nonconference tournament play, the Wolf Pack will open MW play at home, facing off with San José State at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday night in Virginia Street Gym. Tickets are available at NevadaWolfPack.com or by calling 348-PACK.
