SAN FRANCISCO – In a match that saw plenty of career highs, the Nevada Wolf Pack defeated the Utah Valley Wolverines (0-3) three sets to one (25-17, 20-25, 25-14, 25-19) Saturday afternoon to even its record 1-1.
Junior
Peighton De Von put up career numbers with 14 kills and eight blocks, both match highs, to lead the Pack. Sophomores
Shayla Hoeft and
Ayla Fresenius both recorded 13 kills and senior
Madison Foley tallied 12 to join De Von in the double figures column. It was the first time since Oct. 6, 2016 that four Wolf Pack players recorded at least 10 kills in the same match. Fresenius also dug 13 balls for the first double-double of the season. Sophomore
Camille Davey dug 18 balls for a new career high. Sophomore
Dalyn Burns ran a prolific offense Saturday afternoon, tallying 52 assists for a career high of her own.
Getting off to a much quicker start than Friday, the Wolf Pack jumped out to a 3-1 lead. Utah Valley was able to surge, however, tying it up at six all. The two teams continued to go back and forth. Finally, all tied up at 12, Fresenius put down two straight kills to take a 14-12 advantage, the first lead larger than a point since Nevada lead 5-3. Up 15-14, Nevada turned on the burners and never let off, outscoring Utah Valley 10-3 down the stretch to take set one 25-17.
To say the second set started close would be an understatement. With a total of 11 ties and four lead changes, the two teams were all knotted up at 11 points apiece. Utah Valley scored the next two points, however, and the Pack couldn't get the lead back, falling in set two 25-20.
The first several points of set three mirrored the prior two as both teams were tied up at nine. Nevada, taking a 10-9 lead first, capitalized off four straight errors by the Wolverines, jumping to a 14-9 lead to force the Utah Valley timeout. The Wolverines were never able to recover as the Wolf Pack dominated set three with a score 25-14.
The fourth set's breakout came when the Wolf Pack scored four straight points, breaking the 11-11 tie to take a 15-11 lead. As stats continued to build, the Wolf Pack would go on to take set four 25-19, winning the match 3-1.
The Wolf Pack's home opener is Tuesday when they rematch San Francisco at 6:30 p.m. in the Virginia Street Gym.
