TUCSON, Ariz. - Concluding its 2016-17 season at the Mountain West Championship, the Nevada men's golf team recorded a sixth place finish.
The Wolf Pack posted its second straight team round under par on Sunday with a 2-under 286. Thanks to its final round play Nevada jumped one spot on the leaderboard into sixth place. The Pack finished the championship at 2-over par with a three-day total score of 866. Nevada was five shots ahead of Air Force and six shots ahead of Wyoming for sixth.
UNLV claimed the team title at 18-under par after poor play on No. 18 by runner-up Colorado State gave the Rebels the one-shot win. With UNLV finishing ahead of Nevada, it earns three points towards the Governor's Series and brings the lead to just three, 18-15, for the Wolf Pack.
Playing in his final collegiate event, senior Nick Fuller led the Wolf Pack on the final day of the championship. Fuller made four birdies during his third round to card a 1-under round of 71. Thanks to his strong play he moved up six spots on the leaderboard to record a top 15 finish. He was the only Pack player to finish the tournament under par, coming in at 1-under overall.
It was junior Kaleb Gorbahn who posted the low Nevada round on Sunday though, carding a 3-under 69, his best of the weekend. Gorbahn, who struggled early in the championship with rounds of 74 and 76, birdied nearly half of the holes he played today as he finished with seven. Sitting at 3-over through his first four holes, Gorbahn turned it around in a big way and played the back nine bogey free at 4-under. He completed his first Mountain West Championship in a tie for 32nd place.
Also tying for 32nd was junior Corey Eddings who followed up his second round score of 68 with a 1-over 73 on Sunday. Junior Grant Booth led the Pack at the beginning of the day but fought his way to a 3-over round of 75, caused by a triple bogey on No. 18. For his finish Booth fell just outside of the top 20. Sophomore Travis Fredborg fired his best round of the championship with a 73, besting the pair of 76s he posted earlier in the weekend. He finished in a tie for 46th.
Brian Humphreys of Boise State claimed the individual title, finishing at 12-under par. He bested runner-up finisher Donny Hopoi also of Boise State by two strokes.
