FRESNO, Calif. - After doing its best to climb back in the fourth inning, the Nevada softball team fell to Fresno State 9-1 on Friday. Entering Saturday's second game of the three-game series, the Wolf Pack sit at 16-15 on the season and 2-5 in Mountain West play.
With the Bulldogs (23-11, 5-2 MW) jumping out to earn early 3-0 lead in the first inning, senior McKenna Isenberg kept Fresno State scoreless over the next two innings, where the Pack took advantage of the opportunities it was given in the top of the fourth. After junior Erika Hansen collected Nevada's first hit of the game, freshman Kenzi Goins drew a walk to put runners on first and second with one out for senior Nikki Orozco.
Orozco then singled up the middle to move both runners two bases but Hansen was thrown out on a close play at the plate for the second out of the inning. A wild pitch from the Bulldogs allowed Goins to score from third and trim Fresno State's lead to 3-1.
The Bulldogs responded in the bottom of the fourth with a three-run inning to extend its lead to 6-1 and never looked back from that point as they claimed the 9-1 victory. Nevada will be back on the field on Saturday for the second game of the three-game series against Fresno State. First pitch for that matchup is scheduled for 6 p.m. PT.
