LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Following an outstanding two days of golf, the Nevada men's golf team took home the team title at the Jackrabbit Invitational from Siena Golf Club Saturday afternoon.
This is the first tournament victory for the Wolf Pack since the 2009-10 season when it won the Saint Mary's Invitational. It also marks the first win for head coach Jacob Wilner. Nevada initially was not scheduled to compete in this event but due to a cancellation earlier this week, Wilner added the Jackrabbit Invitational to the schedule.
"I'm so happy these guys get to enjoy the feeling of a team win," said Wilner. "To beat a very good UNLV team is a huge accomplishment for them."
Nevada entered Saturday's final round with an 11-shot lead over runner-up, and the nation's 17th-ranked team, UNLV. Throughout the day the Rebels closed the gap, getting to within four shots at one point. Nevada stepped it up down the stretch however and played its final nine holes at 10-under par. The Pack's three round team score of 823 is the second-lowest 54-hole total in program history. It finished the event at an incredible 41-under par, setting a new program record.
The Wolf Pack earned the title in near dominating fashion, placing all four of its counting scores inside the top 15 in the 67-player field. Juniors Grant Booth and Kaleb Gorbahn both tied for second place and finished just one stroke behind the individual champion, Justin Kim of UNLV. Their three-round total scores of 204 are the third-lowest 54-hole totals in program history. Booth began the morning as the event leader and still put together a solid round of 70 for his final 18 holes. Both his tournament score of 12-under par and his tie for second are career-bests.
Gorbahn, who led the field with 21 birdies, followed up his career-low 64 from Friday's second round with a 4-under 68 on Saturday. He, like Booth, notched a new career-best by finishing at 12-under for the tournament. This also marks Gorbahn's second runner-up finish this season. Sophomore Travis Fredborg carded an even par 72 for his final round and birdied two of his last five holes. He recorded a career-best finish of a tie for sixth place and his tournament score of 9-under also set a career-best.
In his first spring event, senior Nick Fuller got back into competition in a big way by picking up a top 15 finish. Fuller put together a near flawless round of golf on Saturday, making three birdies and just one bogey. Fuller also led the field this week by making 40 pars. Junior Corey Eddings rounded out the list of Pack golfers in the event, tying for 49th place. Eddings shot an 81 in the final round but that was mainly due to a rough beginning on his second hole of the day.
Nevada returns to the course for the ASU Thunderbird Invitational on March 18-19 from Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz.
