RENO, Nev. – Putting an end to its four-game skid, the Nevada Wolf Pack (6-16, 4-6 MW) defeated the Air Force Falcons (10-14, 3-7 MW) Saturday afternoon three sets to one.
The set scores ran 25-15, 25-24, 23-25 and 25-19. Senior
Madison Foley put up a monster line on the afternoon with her 18 kills, seven digs and four blocks. She was joined in double figure scoring by sophomore
Ayla Fresenius who tallied 11. In her first match back from injury, sophomore
Shayla Hoeft tallied nine kills while hitting .471and putting down three blocks. Her fellow middle, junior
Peighton De Von, was also very efficient, hitting .417 over her six kills. The Wolf Pack defense was led by sophomore libero
Camille Davey, who tallied 12 digs. Overall, the Wolf Pack hit .300 on the afternoon, a season high in efficiency for the team.
Offense was clicking for the Wolf Pack in the first set as the home team took a 15-10 lead to force the Air Force timeout. Nevada hit .429 through its first 15 points. The Wolf Pack would end the set on a 15-5 run, taking set one 25-15.
Air Force led for most of the first half of the second frame, but back-to-back kills from Minor and Foley tied it up at 13. The Falcons retook the lead, going up 18-15 and then 20-17. Nevada would tie it up again at 20 with a kill from Foley, but Air Force surged right back to a 24-22 lead, giving the visiting team set point. However, fueled by Falcon errors, an ace from Minor and a Foley kill, the Wolf Pack finished the second frame on a 4-0 run, taking the set 26-24 to go up two sets to none in the match.
The Wolf Pack leapt out to a quick 9-5 lead to start the third set, but things quickly got close as both teams exchanged points, eventually tied up at 17. Air Force would score the next two points to take the lead and force the Nevada timeout. Although the Wolf Pack would tie it up again at 22 and 23, Air Force closed out with the final two points of the set to win the frame 25-23.
Although the Wolf Pack was able to build a lead here and there, things were all knotted up at 13 apiece as set four got underway. Two straight hitting errors by Air Force gave Nevada a 19-17, forcing the Falcon timeout. Nevada would only extend its lead out of the timeout, going up 23-19 before the second visitor timeout. Closing things out in fashion, the Wolf Pack scored the final two points to win the final set 25-19 and take the match 3-1.
Nevada will get another game in Virginia Street Gym on Thursday, Oct. 26 when it welcomes San Diego State to Reno for a 6:30 p.m. match.
