Air Force downs Nevada on last second field goal

RENO, Nev. (AP) - Timothy McVey led three Air Force rushers with 100-plus yards and Luke Strebel kicked a 30-yard field goal as time expired to help Air Force beat Nevada 45-42 on Friday night.
 
McVey rushed for 139 yards, Ronald Cleveland had 118 yards on eight carries and Taven Birdow added 100 yards for Air Force (3-4, 2-2 Mountain West). Each player scored a rushing touchdown and Arion Worthman added 92 yards and two TDs. The Falcons gained 550 yards on 91 carries.
 
Air Force's dominant rushing game helped hold the ball for 41 minutes, 20 seconds, including a 20-play drive that lasted nearly 10 minutes in the second half.
 
Ty Gangi went 17 of 33 for 239 passing yards and Kelton Moore rushed for 101 yards and a touchdown for Nevada (1-7, 1-3). Gangi has totaled 925 yards in his last three games.
 
THE TAKEAWAY
Nevada hasn't surrendered more than 500 rushing yards in a game in two decades.
 
UP NEXT
Following a bye week, Nevada plays at Boise State on Nov. 4. Since beating then-No. 3 Boise State in 2010, Nevada has lost four straight against the Broncos.

-With the bye week upcoming, Nevada will not hold its weekly press conference on Tuesday. Wolf Pack players and coaches will be available after practice at normal times on Monday and Tuesday, respectively. Media should turn in requests per usual.
-Nevada's touchdown on its first drive of the game was the team's first score on its opening drive all season.
-Junior safety Asauni Rufus set a career high with 24 tackles in the game, one shy of tying the single game record. Senior LB Austin Paulhus also posted a career high with 21 tackles, third-most all-time.
-Nevada totaled 128 tackles in the game, the most it has ever made in a Mountain West game and the most since it made 119 on Oct. 26, 2012 at Air Force.
-Nevada WR Andrew Celis threw his second career TD pass in the first quarter, a 28-yard pass to Wyatt Demps. That was Demps' eighth TD reception of the season, which ranks third in the nation. Celis also threw a TD pass to Demps against Fresno State in 2016.
- Junior WR Andrew Celis made four receptions in the game, tying his career high.
-True freshman Daiyan Henley's 47-yard kick return in the second quarter was the longest kick return for the Wolf Pack this season.
-Another true freshman found his way into the game tonight for Nevada, LB Mar'Quette Jackson. That makes it 11 true freshmen who have played this season.
-Junior DE Malik Reed's strip sack in the third quarter gives him four forced fumbles and a team-leading 4.5 sacks. Senior LB Austin Paulhus recovered the fumble, the first of his career. Reed finished the game with 11 total tackles, establishing a new career high.
-Redshirt freshman Lawson Hall also recorded a career high with nine total tackles.
-In just his second collegiate game, redshirt freshman LB Kameron Toomer made four tackles.
-Junior QB Ty Gangi finished the game with two touchdown passes and no interceptions. He has thrown 10 TDs to just one interception in his last three games.
-Senior WR Wyatt Demps has now caught a pass in 19 consecutive games.
-Nevada converted a two-point conversion on its first score of the second half. The Wolf Pack is now 2-of-3 on two-point conversions this season, all of which have been pass attempts.
-Junior DB Ahki Muhammad's interception in the fourth quarter was the first of his career.
-Sophomore RB Kelton Moore has now scored a touchdown in three consecutive games after he scored the game-tying TD in the fourth quarter, 35-35. Additionally Moore went over 100 yards rushing for the second time this season and second time in his career.
-Redshirt freshman DB Marcus Lucas and redshirt freshman LB Lawson Hall got the first starts of their collegiate careers tonight.
-Nevada's 42 points tie its season high, set last week at Colorado State.
-The team captains for tonight's game were junior DB Anthony Hankins, junior TE Trae Carter-Wells, junior QB Ty Gangi and junior DE Malik Reed.
-The all-time series between Nevada and Air Force now stands at 3-1 in favor of Air Force. In the four games these two teams have played, neither team has scored less than 31 points.
-The Wolf Pack's booster luncheons return this year with four dates set and a new location for 2017. Coach Jay Norvell's "Gritiron" luncheons will recap games to date and preview upcoming opponents at the luncheons, which are open to the public. This year's luncheons are $20 per person will be held at the Eldorado in Reno on Nov. 6, with one scheduled for the Carson Valley Inn in Minden (Oct. 23).
