Nevada soccer lost to San Jose State at home after being down 2-1 going into halftime and the Spartans pulling away in the second half with a third goal.
It was 90 minutes on nonstop action for the Wolf Pack as 30 shots were taken in the game by the two teams combined. Goalkeeper Kelsey Quintos made six saves but three balls managed to slip past the Pack. In the first period, both of San Jose State's goals were achieved by corner kick set pieces. At 19:00, Spartan Maricuz Chapa took a corner kick, placing the ball into the box where teammate Kristen Amarikwa headed the ball for San Jose State's first goal. Only six minutes later, the Spartans once again capitalized on a corner kick. This time San Jose State's Gabriela Herrera took the corner, she placed the ball to Alexis Venegas in the Nevada box and Venegas managed to get the ball into the net.
Trailing 2-0, Nevada continued to pressure the Spartans. With eight minutes left in the first half, San Jose State fouled the Pack inside the goal box, giving newcomer Maria Sanchez a penalty kick. Sanchez's PK was good and Nevada went into halftime trailing 2-1.
"The lack of focus during set pieces cost us the game," said co-head coach Erin Otagaki. "When you play a solid team like San Jose State, attention to detail is key. We must do a better job of executing in those moments."
In the second half, Nevada came close to scoring on multiple occasions but was unable to get another goal to tie the score. Midway through the second period, the Spartans secured their win with a third goal when Sabrina Miller passed the ball into Nevada's box for Herra to take a shot.
The two teams continued to battle it out until the final whistle. There were five yellow cards given to the two teams during the game. After today's loss, Nevada moves to eighth in the Mountain West standings.
"The next step is to evaluate the game and have another good week of training heading into Colorado State," said co-head coach Casey Tate. "We believe in the group and know they will be ready to fight next week."
The team looks to move up in the rankings next week as they play the eleventh and twelfth ranked teams in the conference. Nevada plays against Colorado State (2-7-1, 0-2-0 MW) on Friday Sept. 30 at 3 p.m. PT in Fort Collins, Colo. The Pack then travels to play Wyoming (4-5-1, 0-2-0 MW) on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 11 a.m. PT in Laramie, Wyo.
