Cal Poly Game Notes

Nevada and Cal Poly are set to kick off the 2016 season Friday night at 6:30 p.m. at Mackay Stadium. Before the game gets underway, here is what you need to know about the Wolf Pack's week one opponent.

The Mustangs of Cal Poly are a member of the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) and are coming off of a 4-7 season. Despite its record, Cal Poly was the top team in the FCS in team rushing for a third straight season. Running the triple option, expect the same type of hard-nosed rushing attack from the Mustangs.

Cal Poly is led by eighth-year head coach Tim Walsh, who enters his 26th season overall as a head coach. Walsh owns a winning record both at Cal Poly (43-37) and for his head coaching career (160-119). Prior to leading the Mustangs, Walsh has spent time as a head coach at Sonoma State and Portland State.

In this year's Big Sky preseason poll, Cal Poly was picked to finish ninth in the league but does return six All-Big Sky honorees from last season. Returning are fullback Joe Protheroe, slot back Kori Garcia, offensive lineman Joey Kuperman, defensive tackle Marcus Paige-Allen, safety B.J. Nard and special teams player Chris Santini. Garcia is a 2,000-yard rusher for his career.

Tickets are still available for tonight's game and can be purchased by calling 348-PACK or online here.
