2016 Badger Invite Results
MADISON, Wis. - The Nevada men's golf team capped off a strong start to the new season with a runner-up finish in the Badger Invitational, hosted by Wisconsin.
"It was nice to have all five guys shoot even par or better today while being in contention for the team title," said coach Jacob Wilner. "It's a good sign for the future when we are in a similar situation."
The Wolf Pack's second place showing is its best finish since placing second at the Fresno Classic in March of 2014. Nevada was one of two teams in the 13-team field to finish under par for the tournament, coming in at 2-under. Of the team's five scores on Tuesday, three guys came in at 1-under while the other two finished at even par. Nevada did not have anything worse than a bogey on Tuesday's scorecard.
Iowa State took the team title after putting together a nearly error free back-9 on Tuesday. The Cyclones were 10-under par for the final round and finished at 12-under for the tournament.
It was senior Nick Fuller who led the way for the Pack with his best personal finish in over a year, a tie for fifth place. Fuller was in contention all day after his second round score of 66 leapt him into the top five yesterday. The Australia native collected four birdies on the day but also bogeyed four holes to finish at even par for the third round. Overall Fuller was 5-under for the three days, three shots behind individual winner Andrew Novak of Wofford.
Junior Corey Eddings placed just outside of the top 10, tying for 12th place and finishing even for the tournament. Eddings, along with fellow junior Grant Booth and sophomore Travis Fredborg, carded a 1-under 71 for the final round. Fredborg finished one shot behind Eddings and tied for 16th place at 1-over. He made just one bogey all day.
Booth collected five birdies on the day to lead the team and placed inside the top 20 at 2-over par. Newcomer Kaleb Gorbahn, playing in his first tournament with the Wolf Pack, improved from Monday's 81 and shaved nine strokes off his Tuesday score, shooting an even par 72. He finished in a tie for 59th place. Junior David Hinitz tied for 79th competing as an individual.
Nevada will get right back to it as it competes next week in the Ram Masters Invitational at Fort Collins Country Club in Fort Collins, Colo.
