RENO, Nev. - Nevada soccer was unsuccessful in defeating Portland State today, losing 1-0 in Mackay Stadium. Nevada's overall record is now 2-3-0 after a win earlier this weekend and the loss today.
"The team's work rate needs to be better," said co-head coach Erin Otagaki. "Their ability to win 50/50 balls and join in on the attack wasn't the same as it was on Friday's game."
The first half of the match remained scoreless as the Wolf Pack battled the Vikings. Portland State brought the intensity taking multiple shots early on. Nevada fought back, but neither team was able to find the back of the net.
Midway into the second half at 66:12, Portland State's Morgan Matthews got the ball roughly 45 yards away from Nevada's goal. With a long shot, Matthews' ball went over goalkeeper Kelsey Quintos' head and into the goal. The Pack made several attempts to tie up the game as multiple shots were taken by Angel Meriwether, Gaby Caporicci, and Aless Abbühl.
"The discipline and extra effort we saw from the team Friday wasn't the same level today and it cost us the game," said co-head coach Casey Tate. "Regardless of how unlucky the goal was, we didn't play to the best of our ability, but we can learn from this and develop as a team before next Friday."
Both Nevada and Portland State had 14 shots each and neither team took a corner kick. Quintos made seven saves and is still only one shutout shy from tying the school record for career solo shutouts.
The Pack takes on UTEP in El Paso, Texas on Friday, Sept. 16 at 12 p.m. (PT).
