This year marks the 50th anniversary of Mackay Stadium. As we count down the days until the opening of a newly renovated Mackay, let’s take a look back at some of the great games and memories from the first 50 years.
The Day of the Hawk
Hall of Fame RB celebrated – and doesn’t disappoint – in final home performance.
Nov. 22, 1980: The “Day of the Hawk” was proclaimed by Governor Robert List. 5,068 commemorative pins (the number matching Frank Hawkins career rushing yards to date) were given to fans in attendance at Mackay Stadium that day. Hawkins did not disappoint in his final game, rushing for 265 yards and four touchdowns in a 38-7 win over Idaho.
Hawkins would later be enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame, the only Nevada player so honored. He finished his Wolf Pack career with 5,333 rushing yards – the I-AA record for years to come and still the Wolf Pack’s career record.
