HONOLULU, Hawaii - The Nevada soccer team played a physical season opener Friday night but fell just shy of a win, falling 1-0 to Gonzaga.

The Bulldogs solo goal was scored in the first half followed by a second half full of fouls, corner kicks and offsides, but no goals for either team.

Gonzaga held the upper hand offensively, out shooting Nevada 13-4. The Bulldogs Sarah Carter scored from 25 yards out, after a corner kick taken by teammate Savanah Van Citters at 25:38. Despite trailing the rest of the game, Nevada fought hard to fend off Gonzaga's pressure. This level of intensity led to a combined total of 29 fouls and three yellow cards, one on the Pack and two on Gonzaga.

"It was a very physical game," said co-head coach Casey Tate after discussion with co-head coach Erin Otagaki. "We created a lot of set pieces and corners, but just couldn't get on the end of them. The team fought until the end and we are proud of their effort. We need to get more shots on goal and will work on this next week to find those positions and opportunities moving forward."

The Pack's defense pulled Gonzaga offside three times and goalkeeper Kelsey Quintos made six saves.

Nevada has another opportunity this weekend as it faces Hawaii on Sunday at 7 p.m. PT.
