RENO, Nev. - Chris Vargas threw for 388 yards and five touchdowns, all in the second half, as Nevada scored three touchdowns in the final 5:14 of the game to claim at wild 48-47 win over stunned Utah State. The win gave the Wolf Pack at least a share of the Big West Conference championship in its first year in the league.
Following a successful onside kick, Vargas hit Bryan Reeves with a 28-yard touchdown pass which Reeves wrestled away from two defenders in the end zone to give the Pack the margin of victory.
Sean Jones' 51-yard field goal attempt with eight seconds remaining was just wide and Nevada had won.
Led by quarterback Anthony calvillo, who threw for 428 yards, five touchdowns and ran for 61 yards and another score, the Aggies racked up 684 yards of total offense.
Vargas, who led the Wolf Pack to the greatest comeback in collegiate history just a year ago against another northern Utah team (Weber State), threw for 333 yards the week before in the second half against San Jose State.
