ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Sophomore Trenton Brooks scattered four hits and two runs in 7.2 innings pitched and also drove in two runs, leading No. 3 Nevada to a 5-3 victory over No. 6 San Diego State on Friday at the Mountain West Championships.
The Wolf Pack (35-22) advances to meet top-seeded Fresno State (36-21) at 2 p.m. PT today. The game will be streamed live on the Mountain West Network. Nevada eliminated the Aztecs with the victory, snapping SDSU's streak of 14 straight MW tournament elimination game victories.
Nevada plated five runs with 15 hits. Sophomore TJ Friedl went 3-of-4 with one run while five other players chipped in with two hits apiece. Brooks tallied his sixth win of the season after keeping the Aztecs scoreless for the first seven innings.
Friedl opened the game with a leadoff bunt single and junior Justin Bridgman drew a walk to put two on with one out. Brooks came up clutch and helped his cause with a double to deep right-center, scoring both runs to put Nevada in front, 2-0, after the first inning. Meanwhile, Brooks retired his first 13 batters faced and took a perfect game into the fifth inning. He allowed Nevada to jump out to a five-run lead before his shutout bid was broken up in the eighth inning.
Nevada took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as senior Bryce Greager hit a leadoff double and then scored on senior Justin Hazard's RBI single. Nevada added one run on a bizarre play in the sixth inning. Sophomore Jordan Pearce cleared the right field fence for a home run, but passes Greager on the base path and was therefore credited with an RBI unassisted groundout. The Pack took a 5-0 lead in the seventh frame when sophomore Cole Krzmarzick hit his first career triple and scored on Pearce's RBI double to center field.
The Aztecs scored two runs in the eighth inning and added one ninth to trim the deficit to 5-3 before Nevada closed out the victory.
