ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The third-seeded Nevada baseball team routed No. 6 San Diego State, 13-5, on Wednesday night in its Mountain West Championship opening game. The Wolf Pack (34-22) received eight solid innings from starter Christian Stolo and slugged 13 runs on 17 hits at Santa Ana Star Field to advance on the winner's side of the bracket.
Nevada - who tallied its first MW tournament-opening win since 2013 - will now face second-seeded hosts New Mexico (35-21) at 6 p.m. PT on Thursday.
After surrendering three runs in the top of the first, the Wolf Pack roared back with nine straight runs to win comfortably. Stolo took the win, matching a season-high with eight innings pitched without issuing a single walk. Sophomore Jordan Pearce tallied three extra-base hits, three RBI and three runs to lead Nevada's potent offense.
The Aztecs struck first as Tyler Adkison hit a three-run home run in the first inning. Nevada stayed poised and responded in a big way in the bottom first with six runs on six hits to claim the lead. Junior Trenton Brooks plated Nevada's first runs with a two-RBI triple to right field. Senior Bryce Greager followed with an RBI single down the right field line to tie the game. Nevada then took the lead as Pearce tripled to center field, scoring two runs to take a 5-3 advantage.
Nevada scored one run in the second inning to take advantage of an error. Sophomore TJ Friedl hit a bunt single and raced all the way to third on a throwing error before scoring on Brooks' RBI sacrifice fly on the following at bat.
The Pack then scored two runs in the third and fourth innings to open an 11-4 advantage. Pearce hit his second triple of the game and scored on a safety squeeze bunt from senior Justin Hazard. Friedl followed with an RBI single to score Hazard in the bottom third. Nevada added two more runs in the bottom fourth with back-to-back RBI doubles from Pearce and Hazard.
After two scoreless innings, Nevada added one run in the seventh frame to lead, 12-5. Friedl drew a walk and moved to third on junior Justin Bridgman's double. Junior Miles Mastrobuoni then hit an RBI sacrifice fly to left field as Friedl tagged and scored from third. Nevada tacked on its final run in the eighth inning to make it 13-5 as Hazard hit an RBI single to center field.
Stolo tallied his fourth win of the season, allowing five runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts in a steady performance. Senior RHP Sam Held closed the game with a scoreless ninth inning in relief.
In addition to Pearce's great day at the plate, Hazard went 3-of-4 with four RBI and one run. Brooks went 2-of-3 with three RBI and two runs. Friedl, Bridgman and Greager each added two-hit performances. Nevada tallied eight extra-base hits in the contest.
Nevada returns to the diamond on Thursday, meeting the Lobos at 6 p.m. PT. The game will be broadcast live on the Mountain West Network, powered by Campus Insiders. The Pack and Lobos went 3-3 against each other in the regular season. The winner of the Nevada-New Mexico game will advance to the semifinals.
