RENO, Nev. - In each of the last two wins for the University of Nevada (6-14, 2-4 MW) men's tennis team it came down to the No. 5 singles match and sophomore Robert Margitfalvi. Both times Margitfalvi delivered with a three-set win to clinch Wolf Pack victories with the latest coming in a 4-3 win over Fresno State (9-16, 0-6 MW) on Senior Day at Caughlin Club today. The first occurrence came back on Apr. 10 when the Pack won 4-3 at #64 Boise State.
Seniors Andrew Poustie, Robert Allan, Ryan Andrada and Billy Bumgardner where recognized prior to the match for their contributions to Wolf Pack tennis. Allan and Andrada earned victories in their final home match.
With today's victory the Pack improved to 6-14 and 2-4 in Mountain West play. The Bulldogs dropped to 9-16 and they remained winless in conference play at 0-6.
Next action for the Pack is Wednesday when they play Air Force (6-16, 1-4 MW) in Las Vegas prior to the MW tournament. The match was originally scheduled for Apr. 17 at Colorado Springs but was postponed because of a snow storm in Colorado.
Nevada trailed Fresno State 1-0 after the doubles matches. FS won the #2 and #3 doubles matches to secure the point. The Bulldogs' #2 team of Jeremy Moser and Nikolas Papic defeated Mile Cilic and Margitfalvi 6-2. Nevada's #1 duo of Allan and Poustie scored a 6-4 victory over Euan McIntosh and Patrik Pech to even the doubles competition. It came down to the #3 doubles match where Youssef Hassan and Mantas Bugailiskis downed Andrada and Aaron Breust 6-4 as FS earned the doubles point.
Bugailiskis defeated Cilic 6-2, 6-4 in the first completed singles match on court 3 and FS led 2-0. Breust got the Pack on the scoreboard with a 6-4, 6-1 win in the #6 singles match over Jakob Kepplemann. Andrada tied the score at 2-2 with his 6-3, 7-5 victory over Papic.
Allan knocked off Pech 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) in the #4 singles match to give Nevada its first lead 3-2 of the day and get the Pack within a point of a victory. In a close match on court 2 the Bulldog's McIntosh defeated Poustie 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) and the match was tied 3-3 to setup the exciting finish.
Margitfalvi delivered with a three-set victory, 7-5, 4-6 and 7-5 over Hassan to send the Pack seniors home with victory on Senior Day.
