LAS VEGAS - Two freshmen lifted the Nevada softball team to a 6-0 win over in-state foe UNLV on Friday in Las Vegas as Brooke Bolinger tossed a complete game shutout with six strikeouts and Kwynn went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.
The Wolf Pack also saw stellar performances from senior Jasmine Jenkins, who went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, and sophomore Jennifer Purcell, whose two RBI double in the top of the sixth widened the lead and gave Bolinger (14-4) some much needed breathing room. Nevada (29-8, 7-3 MW) last won at UNLV on Feb. 15, 2009.
In the swirling wind, Warner led-off the game with a double to the left-center field gap. After the Rebels retired the next two hitters, Jenkins stepped to the plate ripped a double down the left field line that scored Warner and gave the Pack a 1-0 lead.
After Bolinger struck out the side in the bottom of the second, sophomore Aaliyah Gibson reached on a fielder's choice and later moved to third after a Jenkins single and a Purcell walk. Junior Melissa Arriaga then stepped to the plate and worked a brilliant at-bat that led to a walk, scoring Gibson from third and extending the Nevada lead to 2-0.
In the meantime, Bolinger kept the Rebel bats at bay. UNLV put runners on in the third, fourth and fifth innings but the freshman escaped each time.
The Pack helped its pitcher's cause in the top of the sixth inning. Junior Raquel Martinez led-off with a walk and moved to second on an infield single from Warner. Down in the count, Gibson checked her swing but found a hole through the right side. Martinez scored all the way from second and the Pack went up 3-0. UNLV retired the next two Nevada batters but Purcell delivered with the biggest hit of the night. The Carson City native made it a 5-0 game after rocketing her 17th double of the season down the right field line and clearing the bases.
Warner tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh with an RBI double, her fourth hit of the evening, that made it 6-0 and scored pinch runner Amanda Geil all the way from first.
The first pitch for game No. 2 of the three-game series is set for tomorrow at 1 p.m.
