RENO, Nev. - Sophomore tight end Matt Moen will medically retire from football, Nevada head coach Brian Polian announced on Tuesday.
A 6-foot-3 tight end out of Cibolo, Texas, Moen played in Nevada's season-opener last year before missing the remainder of the season. Moen suffered an optic nerve injury in one of his eyes.
"We were disappointed to learn recently that Matt Moen has been medically disqualified and can no longer participate in football," said head coach Brian Polian. "He suffered an injury to the optic nerve in one of his eyes and as a result it is clear to our medical staff and to Matt that it's not in his best interests to continue to play. We are heartbroken for Matt because we know how much this team and competing at this level meant to him. He embodies everything that we look for in a member of our family - incredible student, a hard-working and talented athlete, and a great person. We wish Matt all the best moving forward and hope to keep him with the team in some fashion."
Prior to his injury-shortened season last year, Moen played in all 13 games as a true freshman in 2014. Moen made three starts and also played a major role blocking for Nevada's rushing attack. Moen earned Academic All-Mountain West honors that season and was also named a MW Scholar-Athlete.
