RENO, Nev. - Freshman Brooke Bolinger tossed a complete game with a career-high 10 strikeouts and junior Raquel Martinez drove home the go-ahead runs in the bottom of the fifth with a two RBI double as the Nevada softball defeated Boise State, 5-2, in front of 225 at Hixson Park on Saturday.
Sophomore Aaliyah Gibson went 2-for-3 with an RBI triple and reigning Mountain West Player of the Week Jennifer Purcell continued her hot hitting after posting two doubles. Bolinger earned the win and improved to 10-2 on the season. The Wolf Pack (22-5, 3-0 MW) opens conference with a three-game sweep for the first time since 2008 when the Pack swept Utah State.
Bolinger retired the first six batters on six strikeouts before Nevada got on the board in the second. With the bases loaded and no one out, sophomore Amanda Nicholas ripped a single back up the middle that scored senior Jasmine Jenkins from third and gave the Pack a 1-0 lead.
Boise State tied the game up at 1-1 in the top of the fourth but the Pack responded with a big inning in the home half of the frame. The inning started with senior Hannah Harger drawing a walk before moving to third after singles from Gibson and freshman Kwynn Warner. After a pitching change, Martinez rocketed a pitch to center that scored two runs and gave Nevada a 3-1 advantage. Before the inning ended, senior Megan Sweet picked up an RBI single that made it 4-1.
Bolinger blanked the Broncos in the sixth and in the bottom half of the inning, Gibson provided some much needed insurance with an RBI triple to the right field corner that scored Harger all the way from first.
Nevada continues conference play Tuesday against San Diego State with a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. and a single game on Wednesday at 12 p.m.
