RENO, Nev. - Fighting off rain and strong winds during its 2016 home opener, the Nevada women's tennis team overtook 67th-ranked Cal State Fullerton Friday afternoon, 4-2.
Cal State Fullerton came into the match having lost just one other time this season and had 10 wins to its credit. Nevada (4-6) began the day by earning the doubles point, taking two of the three doubles matches. The first doubles match to finish belonged to the Titans, 6-3. The Wolf Pack however cleaned up the remaining two matches, 6-4 and 6-3. The point-clinching doubles match was won by the #1 doubles team of sophomore Blaga Delic and junior Shelia Morales.
After the Titans claimed the first win in singles competition, sophomore Claudia Herrero improved to 18-4 on the year with her 6-2, 5-3 victory over Alexis Valenzuela in #1 singles. The only other win by Cal State Fullerton came in #3 singles.
A three-set match in #4 singles was won by Nevada freshman Adriana Gergelyova (6-3, 2-6, 6-3). This tied the competition up at two apiece. Playing at #2 singles, Morales earned her 13h win of the season in a match-clinching victory. After trading 6-3 sets with her opponent Sarah Nuno, Morales dominated the third set, 6-1, sealing the 4-2 win for the Wolf Pack.
The win is Nevada's third consecutive victory. The match experienced two weather delays, the second of which lasted more than 30 minutes.
