IRVINE, Calif. - The Nevada baseball team suffered its first shutout loss of the season on Sunday, falling 6-0 in the series finale to UC Irvine at Anteater Ballpark. The Wolf Pack was also dealt its first three-game series sweep since May 15-17, 2014.
Nevada has opened the season with an eight-game road trip over the span of 10 days, posting a 3-5 record. The Pack will now set its sights on its home opener Tuesday at Peccole Park. Nevada hosts Santa Clara (4-3) at 3 p.m. PT on Tuesday. Nevada is in pursuit of its 500th all-time victory at Peccole Park, boasting a 499-240 record in 28 seasons at its home ballpark.
On Sunday, the Wolf Pack was held to a season-low four hits while only twice putting a runner in scoring position. UC Irvine's sophomore RHP Shaun Vetrovec pitched seven scoreless innings while only allowing three hits and one walk. Junior LHP Trenton Brooks took the loss on the mound for the Pack, allowing six runs and seven hits in five innings of work.
The Anteaters (5-3) scored two runs in the second and third innings and added one run in the fifth and sixth. Junior Justin Bridgman hit a lead-off single in the first inning for Nevada and reached second on a sacrifice bunt and senior Justin Hazard reached on a fielder's chose and stole second base in the second inning, but those were the lone occasions Nevada threatened with runners in scoring position.
Bridgman, Hazard, sophomore TJ Friedl and junior Brandon Evans each had one hit for Nevada, while senior Bryce Greager drew two walks. Redshirt freshman RHP Charlie Brooks made his collegiate debut in relief of Trenton Brooks, allowing no runs and two hits in 2.1 innings with a pair of strikeouts.
