MESA, Ariz. - The Nevada baseball team scored one run in the eighth and ninth innings, but its season-opening rally fell short in a 4-2 loss to Northwestern on Friday in game one of a doubleheader at Sloan Park.
The Wolf Pack fell into a 4-0 hole after allowing two runs in the first inning and a two-run home run in the seventh inning. Sophomore Grant Fennell scored sophomore Cole Krzmarzick with an RBI groundout in the eighth inning to plate Nevada's first run. Sophomore Jordan Pearce hit a lead-off single in the ninth inning and scored on junior Justin Bridgman's RBI single to trim the lead to 4-2. The Wildcats stranded Bridgman on third to halt Nevada's rally.
Senior Christian Stolo started on the mound for the Wolf Pack, allowing two runs on seven hits in six innings of work. Stolo allowed two runs in the first before settling down and pitching five straight scoreless innings. Junior Evan McMahan and junior Ty Pennington pitched in relief for Nevada.
Bridgman led Nevada at the plate, going 2-of-4 with an RBI. Junior Trenton Brooks, senior Bryce Greager, Pearce and sophomore TJ Friedl also added one hit a piece for the Pack.
Nevada scored two runs on seven hits with no errors, while Northwestern plated four runs on nine hits with no errors.
The second game of the doubleheader at Sloan Park will begin at 5 p.m. PT.
