RENO, Nev. - The Nevada Wolf Pack (5-2) fell to the Iona Gaels (3-2) in the championship game of the Great Alaska Shootout Saturday night 75-73.
For the sixth game this season, at least four players scored more than 10 points. The team was led by senior Marcus Marshall, whose 21 points put him at more than 20 for the fourth straight game. Senior D.J. Fenner made a big impact off the bench with his 18 points while junior Elijah Foster recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Cameron Oliver tacked on 10 points to the Wolf Pack total. Sophomore Lindsey Drew tallied up eight assists. Marshall, Oliver and Drew were all named to the all-tournament team.
Both teams exchanged ties and leads all throughout the game, but things really started to heat up as time ticked away in the second half. While Marshall hit back-to-back shots to give Nevada a two point lead, Iona quickly claimed it back and the teams stayed close right until the end. With just less than a minute to play, the Wolf Pack found themselves down 73-70. It was Marshall who came in clutch again from beyond the arch to tie it up before Iona's Jon Severe found a lane and drove to the net for two, putting Iona up 75-73 with .5 on the clock. A long inbound to Oliver couldn't do the trick, and the Wolf Pack fell to the Gaels 75-73 to claim runner-up honors in the tournament.
Nevada will return to Lawlor Events Center on Tuesday night, facing Pacific at 7 p.m.
