RENO, Nev. - Coming off Saturday's dominating 45-10 win over in-state rival UNLV, the University of Nevada football program will paint the Fremont Cannon in a ceremony on Sunday at 1 p.m. in front of the Joe Crowley Student Union on campus. The public is invited to the event.
The winner of the annual rivalry game earns possession of the cannon, the largest and most expensive traveling trophy in college sports. The Wolf Pack won the trophy on Saturday with a thrashing of the Rebels at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas.
The Wolf Pack's senior class will take turns with the first strokes of silver and blue paint on the cannon, a replica of a Civil War-era howitzer named after Gen. John C. Fremont, who explored the west.
In the coming weeks, the University's paint shop will provide the official re-painting of the cannon and the trophy will move back to its home in Cashell Fieldhouse. Nevada has now won 25 of the 42 meetings all-time against UNLV. The Wolf Pack holds a 12-9 mark in games played in Las Vegas and Nevada has won 10 of the past 12 meetings.
In Saturday's game, junior running back James Butler ran for 196 yards and three touchdowns while catching five passes for 48 yards and another touchdown in the victory. Sophomore quarterback Ty Gangi completed 15-of-22 for 193 yards and a touchdown while running for 99 yards and another score.
The Pack defense held the Rebels rushing attack, which entered the game 15th in the nation, to more than 50 yards below its average per game.
