RENO, Nev. - The Nevada Wolf Pack (4-1) handed the Oakland Golden Grizzlies (4-1) their first loss of the season late Thursday night at the Great Alaska Shootout with a big second half, defeating Oakland 82-78.
The Pack outscored the Golden Grizzlies by 20 points in the second half, shooting 66.7 percent from the field, fueled by senior Marcus Marshall's 21 second half points. Marshall ended the night with 25 to lead the Pack offense. Right behind him was sophomore Cameron Oliver with 22 points as well as eight rebounds. Junior Elijah Foster and sophomore Jordan Caroline also had double figures in the score column with 10 points. Caroline tacked on 10 rebounds for his third consecutive double-double. The game was the fourth game that at least four Pack players have eclipsed 10 points. The 16 point deficit the Wolf Pack overcame is the largest in the history of the Great Alaska Shootout.
Things started slow for the Wolf Pack, facing a 16-3 deficit after almost eight minutes of play. Nevada wasn't out of it yet, going on a 9-2 run to get back into it, down 18-12 with 10 minutes to play. While Nevada would stay within eight for most of the half, the Golden Grizzlies began to pull away as the clock ticked down, going into the half up on the Wolf Pack 44-28.
The Wolf Pack surged out of the half, going on a 12-2 run to bring it within six, 49-43. Continuing to chisel away at the lead, Nevada came within three at 51-48 with 13:53 on the clock. While Oakland kept the advantage, the Pack wasn't letting them pull away. With 9:26 to play, sophomore Lindsey Drew found and lane and slammed the ball down, tying the game up at 58 and taking away the Golden Grizzly lead for the first time since they staked one. As the two teams continued back and forth, Oliver hit a wide-open three to give Nevada its first lead of the game, up 64-62 with 7:11 to play. The game stayed a thriller with Oakland coming within one and two, not letting Nevada get away. However, the Pack would stay on top, outscoring the Golden Grizzlies by 20 points in the second half to claim victory 82-78.
Nevada will face Buffalo in the semifinal round Friday at 6:30 p.m. PT.
