RENO, Nev. - Picking up its first win of the season in the home opener, the Nevada Wolf Pack (1-1) defeated the Loyola Marymount Lions (1-1) 79-64 Monday night in Lawlor.
Junior Elijah Foster had a career game against the Lions, setting a career high with 18 points and adding 10 rebounds for his first career double-double. Foster joined senior Marcus Marshall (18), sophomore Cameron Oliver (14) and senior D.J. Fenner (12) in scoring more than 10 points. As a team, the Pack shot 56 percent from the field and led the Lions for a total of 39:15.
The Wolf Pack took the lead quick, opening up play with four unanswered points. Playing aggressively, Nevada was able to earn some time at the line, shooting six free throws to take a 10-4 lead with 15:13 to play. The Pack held LMU to just two points in the next three and a half minutes as the home team widened its lead to 17-6 with 11:43 to play. Tempo became a staple for Nevada as the game continued with breakaways, dunks and steals scattered throughout. Foster recorded two dunks of his own as Nevada went into the locker room at the half up 35-26.
Nevada came out of the half, holding onto an eight point lead. LMU began to close the gap as Nevada went almost three minutes without scoring. Oliver said enough was enough, however, and found the lane to slam the ball down, electrifying the crowd of 6,176 and putting Nevada up 42-35. That dunk was the first of two and, combined with an-one, gave Oliver nine straight points to put Nevada up 49-40. The Lions weren't going down without a fight as they went 5-for-5 with 6:17 to play, cutting the Pack lead to six, 62-56. That was the closest the Lions would get though as Nevada went on to its first season win with a final score of 79-64.
The Pack will return to Lawlor Friday night at 7 p.m. to face Pac-12 foe Oregon State.
