Nick Watney Final Results
FRESNO, Calif. - The Nevada men's golf team made a push on the last couple of holes to record a tie for second place at the Nick Watney Invitational, hosted by Fresno State at San Joaquin Country Club.
This marks the team's third-straight runner-up finish. It is the first time in program history that the Wolf Pack has started the year with back-to-back-to-back second place finishes. It is also the first time since the 2013-14 season that the team has started with three consecutive top fives.
"Today we did a really good job of finishing our rounds," said head coach Jacob Wilner. "We fell short of a team win but to have our third consecutive runner-up finish is an ideal start. I'm really impressed with how our guys have played during the first three events. We have played in three different time zones with completely different types of grasses and course set ups. It shows how well they adjust and they are certainly playing well."
The Wolf Pack used a season-low team score of 3-under 281 to notch its second place showing. Nevada tied with Saint Mary's at 3-over for the tournament and was two strokes behind event winner BYU. All five on the Pack lineup birdied No. 18, and junior Corey Eddings who was the last on the course for the team, also birdied the 17th to jump Nevada from fourth place to a tie for second.
Nevada continues to play the par 5s tough as it led the 15-team field in par 5 scoring for the tournament at 19-under. BYU ranked second in the category but six shots lower than the Pack. Consistency was the theme of the event as Nevada also led the field in pars (184).
Junior Grant Booth began the day just inside the top 10 and vaulted up the leaderboard with a season-best round of 68 to tie for fifth place, a career-best finish. He began his back-9 going birdie, birdie, eagle, which put him at 3-under par for the day. He finished three shots behind individual winner Perry Cohen of Saint Mary's.
Eddings also recorded a top 10, his first of the season, tying for 10th place. He began the final round at 1-under overall and finished at even par after a 1-over round of 72 today. Junior Kaleb Gorbahn picked up a top 15 in the field of 89 after tying for 13th. He carded his best round of the tournament with a 1-under 70 on Tuesday.
Sophomore Travis Fredborg notched a tie for 20th thanks to his best round of the event, an even par 71. He came in at 4-over for the tournament. Senior Nick Fuller rounded out the Pack's lineup, tying for 26th at 7-over par. Junior Tyler Saunders, who was entered as an individual, struggled in the final round and carded a 78 to tie for 52nd place.
Nevada will get right back to it this weekend as it is scheduled to compete in the three-day Fightin' Irish Classic, which begins on Sunday.
