RENO, Nev. (AP) -- Sophomore Ty Gangi took over for an injured Tyler Stewart and rallied the Wolf Pack, but Nevada's comeback attempt ultimately fell short against Wyoming on Saturday night at Mackay Stadium.
A late touchdown run by James Butler pulled Nevada within one score, and the Wolf Pack recovered an onside kick with less than a minute to go. But a Cowboy interception ended the rally and Nevada fell, 42-34.
A high-scoring third quarter - in which each team put two touchdowns on the board - led to a right fourth quarter before the Cowboy rushing attack nearly put the game out of reach for Wyoming. Brian Hill got Wyoming deep in Nevada territory and Josh Allen put the game out of reach with the Cowboys' fifth rushing TD of the night.
Nevada had an earlier chance to tie the game in the fourth quarter. Trailing by eight at 35-27, the Pack forced a defensive stop and got the ball back with plenty of time left on the clock. Nevada drove down inside the Wyoming 15-yard line but the drive stalled, in part due to a 15-yard penalty that pushed the team back. Spencer Pettit came on salvage points on the drive with his third field goal of the night, but his 37-yarder missed left.
Gangi had a strong night, completing 27-of-43 for 300 yards and a touchdown. Nine different Pack players caught a pass, including Wyatt Demps, who had eight for 97 yards, and Hasaan Henderson (seven for 89 yards). James Butler ran for 73 yards on 14 carries and also had 43 yards receiving on six catches.
Stewart got off to a strong start, hitting 4-of-5 for 47 yards. But he down hard on the turf on a 15-yard run in the first quarter and did not return to the game The Pack trailed 21-13 after a long first half. Wyoming got on the board first with a 56-yard run by Brian Hill with 6:58 left in the first quarter.
After Nevada got on the board early in the second quarter with a career-long 45-yard field goal by Spencer Pettit, the teams traded touchdowns. Wyoming's came on a 2-yard rush by Hill. Nevada's was a 17-yard rush by Gangi, the first of his collegiate career.
But the Cowboys answered with another touchdown and Nevada could only muster another long field goal by Pettit, a 44-yarder, to make it a 21-13 score going into the break.
Nevada will have a bye week next weekend and the Pack will return to action Nov. 5 at New Mexico. Nevada returns to Mackay for its final two home games, Nov. 12 against San Diego State and Nov. 19 for Senior Day against Utah State.
The Wolf Pack's Blitz Luncheon will be held at the Carson Valley Inn on Monday.
