RIVERSIDE, Calif. - After spending a week in California training, the University of Nevada men's tennis concluded the trip with a 6-1 win at UC Riverside (0-1) on Saturday to start the spring schedule. The Wolf Pack's five singles victories came in straight sets and the lone setback was a three set loss that ended with a 14-12 tiebreaker.
"It is always nice to get the first match under your belt," first-year head coach Sylvain Malroux said. "We saw some solid matches today."
Nevada is back on the road next weekend with two matches in Utah. Saturday the Pack is at BYU and Sunday plays at Utah.
Nevada clinched the doubles point when the Pack's #2 team of Aaron Breust and Peter O'Donovan won 6-3 over Kyle McCann and Sean Yun. The Pack's #1 doubles team of Robert Allan and Andrew Poustie started doubles play with a 6-4 victory over Calvin Ngo and Julian Ruffin. UCR's Sean Robles and Hans Baumstark won the #3 doubles match 6-4 over Mile Cilic and Ryan Andrada.
The Wolf Pack won the first five completed singles matches to secure the victory. Ryan Andrada took the #1 singles match in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 over McCann. Poustie dominated the #2 singles match 6-1, 6-1 against Yun. Cilic also won in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 at #3 singles over McCann to put the Pack up 4-0 and clinch the match.
In the #4 singles match Allan defeated Robles 6-4, 6-1. O'Donovan recorded the Pack's fifth straight sets victory 6-4, 6-2 over Baumstark. UCR's only victory in the match was a tough three set victory by Ngo over Margitfalvi 5-7, 6-3 and 14-12 in the tiebreaker.
