RENO, Nev. - A high scoring, physical contest Sunday afternoon between the Nevada soccer team and Hawaii, resulted in a 3-2 win for the Wolf Pack thanks to a late go-ahead penalty kick goal by freshman Hannah Wuensche.
Sunday's win helped Nevada sweep the weekend after it also defeated Sacramento State Friday evening. The Wolf Pack has now won its last two outings and enters Mountain West play this upcoming weekend with a 3-4-1 record.
The three goals scored today by the Pack is the most since it defeated Sacramento State 3-2 in September of 2013. Additionally, Nevada's 13 shots is the most put up since the Saint Mary's game in early September of last season. The Wolf Pack entered Sunday's match averaging 6.7 shots per game.
In a testy match up that featured a total of 20 fouls, nine yellow cards and one red card, Nevada struck for the first goal in the 38th minute. Off a free kick from about the 30 yard line, senior midfielder Lindsey Salcido found the head of junior defender Brianna Bosson who directed her shot up and past the Hawaii (2-6-1) goalkeeper. The score marks the first of Bosson's career.
Nevada took the 1-0 lead into halftime and retained that lead until the 62nd minute when Hawaii's Raisa Strom-Okimoto netted the equalizer with an unassisted tally. The knotted up score didn't last for long though as redshirt freshman Nikki Mitsuyasu recorded her first collegiate goal a minute and a half later, putting the Pack ahead 2-1 with 25 minutes to play.
As the clock ticked to under four minutes remaining, the Rainbow Wahine once again found the tying goal as Dani Crawford booted in a shot off of a corner kick, tying the game at two. As was custom in this match however, it did not remain tied for long. With 2:31 on the clock, Wuensche was fouled hard in the box and was awarded a penalty kick. The Germany native nailed her PK attempt, the first goal of her career, giving Nevada the lead once more.
It wouldn't be fitting though if Hawaii didn't have one final shot at tying the game. With three seconds to go, Hawaii's Sonest Furtado had a breakaway shot at the net but pushed her shot wide, sealing the win for the Wolf Pack.
Nevada goalkeeper Kelsey Quintos made five stops on the day, which brought her saves total to 10 for the weekend.
Nevada opens up Mountain West action this upcoming weekend at home against Colorado College on Friday at 6:30 p.m. and Air Force on Sunday at 1 p.m.
