MW Preseson Poll
LAS VEGAS - Senior Ian Seau and junior Alex Boy were named to the Preseason All-Mountain West team while Nevada was picked to finish third in the MW West Division. The preseason all-conference teams and poll was announced Tuesday, marking the opening of the Mountain West Football Media Days at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.
The Wolf Pack collected 113 points and were predicted to finish third in the West Division behind only San Diego State (177) and Fresno State (141). Trailing Nevada was San Jose State, Hawai'i and UNLV. Boise State was pegged to win the Mountain Division, followed by Utah State, Colorado State, Air Force, Wyoming and New Mexico.
Entering the third year of the Brian Polian era, Nevada enters the 2015 season with high expectations after posting a 7-6 record last year and advancing to the program's ninth bowl in the past 10 years. Nevada returns 31 letter winners and 12 starters from last year's squad.
A senior defensive end, Seau's All-MW accolade adds to an impressive preseason haul of awards. Seau has also recently been named to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and Lombardi Award watch lists. The 6-foot-3, 250 pound DE earned All-MW second team honors in 2014.
Seau posted 10.5 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks last season, as each statistic ranked in the top 10 in Nevada's record book. Seau also tallied 31 tackles, five passes defended, two forced fumbles and one interception last year.
A junior punter from Long Beach, Calif., Boy has been tabbed as the league's top punter after earning second team All-MW honors last season. Averaging an impressive 44.3 yards per punt, Boy ranked first in the conference and 11th in the nations in yards per punt as a sophomore in his first season as a starter. Boy was also named to Phil Steele's Preseason All-MW team.
The Wolf Pack will meet with local, regional and national media today as the West Division opens MW Football Media Days. Polian, senior RB Don Jackson and senior DE Lenny Jones will represent Nevada at media days. The ESPN3 show will broadcast highlights from MW media days on tape delay at 2 p.m. PT, Wednesday via ESPN3/WatchESPN.
Nevada opens the 2015 season on Thursday, Sept. 3, against UC Davis at Mackay Stadium. For Wolf Pack ticket information, call (775) 348-PACK or register online at NevadaWolfPack.com.
